A public forum to promote peace and mutual understanding amongst all Australians. Hosted by the City of Sydney and organised by the Columban Mission Institute, the Peace Forum is regularly held around Sydney where Christian and Muslim speakers discuss how their respective traditions and teachings promote peace.

SPEAKER BIO

Fr Patrick McINERNEY (Facilitator)
Patrick is a Columban missionary priest who worked in Pakistan for twenty years.  He speaks Urdu and Punjabi. In the mid-eighties he completed a degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies in Rome.  In Pakistan, he was involved in teaching, administration, leadership, and Christian-Muslim Relations.  On his return to Australia, he completed a major thesis entitled ¡§Method in Reconciling Differences between Religions¡¨ for his Masters Degree in Theology.  He is presently a staff member of the Columban Centre for Christian-Muslim Relations and is a doctoral candidate writing a thesis on Christian Theology in Inter Religious Dialogue.


Silma IHRAM
Silma is a Muslim convert of British and Canadian parents. She converted to Islam in 1976 and returned to Australia where she has been active in establishing services for the Muslim community. The mother of 6 children she gained a Master¡¦s degree in Educational Administration and has established two schools and a childcare centre. The author of two books, producer of an educational video and recently the Principal of Noor Al Houda College in Strathfield, Silma is a pioneer of Muslim education in Australia. The documentary, ¡§Silma¡¦s School¡¨ features her struggle for the survival of her school and for justice.


Chantelle OGILVIE
In 2006 Chantelle studied in Canberra as an inaugural fellow of the Young Catholic Women's Interfaith Fellowship.  Chantelle worked in youth ministry as coordinator of Parramatta Young Christian Students a movement of young people from Catholic, Muslim and other backgrounds taking personal and collective action to create positive change.  Chantelle has taught Christian Theology and Inter-Religious Dialogue at Australian Catholic University. She is currently the world Youth Day Co-ordinator for the Young Christian Workers (YCW).


Imam Afroz ALI
Afroz is Founder and President of al- GHAZZALI Centre for Islamic Sciences and Human Development, which provides training and education on Ethics and Personal Development based on Islamic Principles. He has studied in Islamic Studies- Shari¡¦ah, Methodology of Islamic Law- Usool ul Fiqh, and Comparative Religions. He continues his studies under traditional Islamic learning. He holds qualifications to teach the Sacred Knowledge in the faculties of Islamic Law as well as Ethics, Status of Women and Spiritual Development. As an accredited mediator, Afroz provides dispute resolution as well as negotiation facilitation. He undertakes Inter-Religious Dialogues for Understanding and Harmony, and is the recipient of the International Peace Ambassador Award.


Fr Charles RUE
Charles is a Columban missionary priest who was a farmer before entering St Columbans Missionary Society. He was appointed to South Korea where he led parishes and taught Liturgy at the Institute for Spirituality and Theology in Seoul. Back in Australia he completed a Masters in Environmental Planning. He returned overseas to work as a parish priest in Jamaica. Returning to Australia he headed the Regional Columban History Project and was granted a doctorate for his work. He is presently on the staff of the Columban Centre for Peace Ecology and Justice and is Regional Co-ordinator of Justice, Peace & Integrity of Creation.
